I have been running my small construction company and for the few construction projects we have done, the profit margins are soo thin. According to your experience, is this just a normal trend for the construction business or maybe there are ways I can use to reduce the costs of construction? Any experienced contractors in the house please share your insights. Thanks.
The size of a construction project is the main determinant of the costs incurred. To save on the costs of construction, I would advise reducing the size of your structure. This can be done tactically by omitting rooms that are not that important for example. From my point of view according to the research I conducted, size reduction will cater for the reduction of other construction costs. These are:
- Cost of transporting building materials. A smaller structure will need fewer building materials. The fewer the building materials, the cheaper the cost of transporting them.
- Cost of building materials. A smaller structure will not need as many building materials as a large structure.
- Cost of hiring labor. The cost of hiring labor will go down when the size of your structure is reduced. You will be able to construct a small structure with fewer laborers.
- Cost of wiring. When the size of a construction project is reduced, the amount of wire needed for powering the house also reduces.
How To Control Construction Costs
- Account for every cent and make sure it is spent as it was planned on the budget.
- Use cheaper options for building materials e.g. instead of using metal for house framing, you can use wood which is cheaper.
- Adopt simple house designs that will require fewer building materials and a labor force to achieve.
- Where possible, the best way to save on cost is by DIY.
- Stick to the initial plan that has been budgeted for.
