The cause of a running toilet is a worn-out or damaged flapper. A flapper holds the water from entering the tank automatically after the water is refilled once you flush.
When a flapper gets old, it becomes loose, and slowly by slowly, it starts releasing extra water after the tank is full. This will reach a level where the water runs consistently.
When your flapper is broken, the water will start running consistently immediately. This drastic change can be noticed easily.
To fix a running toilet once you take note, replace the flapper by yourself if you have enough skill and experience, alternatively it’s advisable to call a plumber and let them repair your toilets damaged flapper and it shall stop running.
